Inflammaging -The Hidden Fire That Ages You

We all know about inflammation. And, regardless of our age, we all know about aging. But have you heard of inflammaging? Probably not. Yet, this slow-burning process could be one of the most important factors in how we age, feel, and how long we live.

Inflammation isn’t always the bad guy. It has both positive and negative effects. It’s the good guy when you’re healing after an injury or fighting off a virus or bacteria. This healthy response is particularly strong in our younger years as our immune system is both tested and developing.

As we age, the balance is tipped, and we can begin to experience more of the negative effects of inflammation in the form of chronic disease. This is where “inflammation” and “aging,” or inflammaging come into play. This inflammation has been related to heart disease, type 2 diabetes, Alzheimer’s, cancer, and more. However, if you’ve been following The 100 Year LifestyleⓇ, you know that you can’t blame inflammation on your age.

Inflammaging and Visceral Fat

One of the biggest culprits when it comes to inflammaging? Visceral fat. That’s the fat in your body that you can’t see. It stored deep in your abdomen, surrounding all your organs. You can’t pinch it or even see it. But it’s there, secreting proteins called cytokines that spread throughout your body causing inflammation.

Visceral fat makes up about 10% of our body fat. So, if you’re overweight, some of that “extra” will be visceral. There are a couple of different ways to test this. Divide your waist size by your height. A healthy ratio for both men and women is no greater than 0.5. Not good at math? Try using this calculator.

Another way is to use a scale or this calculator to measure your body mass index (BMI). A BMI of more than 30 for adults indicates you might be overweight and have a higher level of visceral fat.

Other Contributing Factors

Needless to say, you cannot have visceral fat and still be experiencing inflammaging. Other contributing factors include the usual suspects. These are things that put your immune system in a state of constant alert, causing your cells to age faster. These include:

  • Poor diet (high in sugar, processed foods, and seed oils)
  • Chronic stress
  • Poor sleep quality
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Environmental toxins
  • Unhealthy gut microbiome

The good news is that you have control over all of these. And by getting control, you’ll cool that internal fire and not only live longer, but healthier.

How to Combat Inflammaging

Target Visceral Fat

  • Eat an anti-inflammatory diet: Focus on whole foods, healthy fats (like olive oil and omega-3s), lean protein, and plenty of fiber. Cut the sugar and refined carbs that fuel visceral fat and inflammation.
  • Move your body: Even 30 minutes a day of brisk walking can shrink visceral fat and reduce inflammatory markers.
  • Get your sleep: Poor sleep increases visceral fat and inflammation. Prioritize good sleep and stick to your routine.

Support Your Gut

  • The gut is a major hub for inflammation. A diverse, fiber-rich diet feeds your good bacteria, keeps your gut barrier strong, and prevents inflammatory compounds from leaking into your bloodstream.

Manage Stress

  • Chronic stress floods your system with cortisol, which promotes fat storage and inflammation. Reset your nervous system with daily relaxation practices.

Detox Your Environment

  • Reduce exposure to endocrine-disrupting chemicals found in plastics, pesticides, and synthetic fragrances. These chemicals can promote fat gain and inflammation.

Prioritize Connection

  • Social isolation and loneliness have been linked to increased inflammation and faster aging. Strong relationships and a sense of purpose are natural anti-inflammatories.

Living Better Starts with Chiropractic Care

As you can see, inflammaging, like healthy longevity, doesn’t happen overnight. It’s the result of your lifestyle, the daily habits, choices, and beliefs that make you who you are. That said, inflammaging is real, but it’s not inevitable.

If you could use help in dealing with inflammaging, then you want to work with someone who specializes in long-term, whole-body health, without pharmaceutical intervention. It’s easy to find a 100 Year LifestyleⓇ near you to help you on your journey!
